Protecting communities goes beyond providing safe and reliable water, it also means safeguarding lives through health education and preventive care.
As part of its unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment under its Gender and Development (GAD) Program, the Dagupan City Water District (DCWD), headed by General Manager Gretchen G. Buena, in partnership with Inner Wheel Club Philippines, Inc., District 379, led by District Chairperson Julie Lim, successfully conducted the Cervical Awareness Project themed “Kaalaman, Bakuna, at Maagang Pagsusuri: Laban sa Cervical Cancer” on August 1, 2026, at the Pangasinan Medical Society Building, Dagupan City.
The initiative was spearheaded by PDC Arlene G. Sanchez, Chairperson of the DCWD Board of Directors, who also served as Chairperson of the Cervical Awareness Project, underscoring her steadfast commitment to advancing women’s health and preventive healthcare in the community.
The activity was further strengthened through the collaboration of the Local Government Unit of Dagupan City, headed by Hon. City Mayor Belen T. Fernandez; the Pangasinan Medical Society, led by President Dr. Rosario V. Pitargue, MD; and Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Medical Hospital. The convergence of government, healthcare professionals, and civic organizations exemplified a shared commitment to promoting cervical cancer awareness and improving access to preventive health services.
One of the highlights of the activity was the administration of the second dose of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to the ten (10) young recipients, aged 9 to 14 years old, completing another important milestone in the continuing vaccination program. Complementing the vaccination program, 22 participants availed themselves of the free cervical cancer screening, providing women with the opportunity to detect possible health concerns at an early stage when intervention is most effective and lives can be saved.
Participants also attended an informative and empowering lecture on cervical cancer awareness delivered by Dr. Ryan Joseph Lirazan, who emphasized the importance of HPV vaccination, regular cervical screening, early detection, and informed health decisions. Through science-based discussions and practical guidance, attendees gained valuable knowledge that encourages proactive healthcare and dispels misconceptions surrounding cervical cancer.
The Cervical Awareness Project stands as another testament to DCWD’s continuing efforts to promote gender-responsive programs that place people at the center of development. By creating opportunities for women and young girls to access life-saving information and preventive healthcare, the initiative transforms awareness into action and compassion into lasting impact.
